This event was much more than a day to "lobby" our legislators! It was an entertaining, educationalexperience for over 750 attendees! Homeschool Iowa Capitol Day provided our Iowa legislators an opportunity to "put a face to homeschooling" by briefly chatting with friendly homeschooling families, face-to-face. What an effective means to make a real difference! But that's not all! We packed the day with lots of exciting opportunities to hear a variety of outstanding speakers.
Homeschooling families from all across the state gathered at the Capitol building in Des Moines. Families viewed displays in the rotunda, visited with their legislators, toured the Capitol building, and viewed the proceedings in the Senate and House chambers from the galleries. Kraig Paulsen, Speaker of the Iowa House of Representatives, and Governor Branstad's Legal Counsel, Brenna Findley, addressed the gathered crowd in the rotunda at 10:45am.

Capitol Day 2014 Afternoon Session
A free shuttle bus provided transportation for Homeschool Iowa Capitol Day 2014 attendees to and from the Afternoon Session at the Marriott Hotel in downtown Des Moines.
National Talk Radio Host (and Iowa homeschooling dad), Steve Deace, opened our 2014 Homeschool Iowa Capitol Day Afternoon Session, immediately after his daughter, Ana Deace, sang our national anthem.
Remarks from Congressman Steve King, who represents the 4th District of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives, opened one of several scheduled sessions in which we heard brief comments from a number of Congressional candidates.
Bob Vander Plaats, president of our event sponsor THE FAMiLY LEADER, was on the Afternoon Session speaker slate, too, and he shared encouraging words to strengthen and inspire the gathered homeschooling families.
A brief presentation was also given by Tamara Scott of CWA on the Common Core Initiative, its claims and its effects.
The 2014 Homeschool Iowa Capitol Day Afternoon Session was designed to satisfy the political enthusiast and to inspire the patriotic citizen. Judging from the response from our 750+ attendees, it delivered all of that -- and more!

As an added bonus in the Afternoon Session, Historical Dramatist Brian Bopp also presented a program entitled "The Foundations of the U.S. Constitution" in which he portrayed five of our nation’s founding fathers: Rev. Samuel Rutherford, Benjamin Franklin, James Madison, Chief Justice John Marshall, and a freedom fighter. Each character represented one of five essential principles represented as stones in "The Foundations of the U.S. Constitution." Young and old alike were blessed by this inspiring presentation.
