Parent-Taught
Driver Education Bill
Introduced

Parent-Taught Driver Education - Iowa Homeschooling - SF 350
Update from NICHE Legislative Liaison Justin LaVan

3-11-09
Thanks to all of you who contacted the Senators on SF 350 -- Parent-Taught Driver Education. I just received a call tonight at 9:00 p.m. from the sponsor of the bill respectfully requesting that we stop the e-mails and calls. We made our point, we are well organized and passionate about this issue. Hundreds of e-mails were sent and many calls were received.

The funnel date has passed, but we will work on ways to add this as an amendment and we want to stay in a good position to run it next year on an election year.

Thanks again.  Spread the word to stop the e-mails and phone calls.

Justin LaVan
NICHE Legislative Liaison

Background Information

SF 350 (Parent-Taught Driver Education) passed out of a Senate Transportation Subcommittee March 10, 2010.  Senator Tom Rielly (the Chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee) kicked the bill over to the Senate Education Committee later that day, presumably in an effort to kill the bill for this session.
(SF 350 amends the transportation section of the Iowa Code—not the education section.) The Education Committee will not be able to take this bill up this week, and it will then be dead for the session because the first funnel date for legislation is this Friday, March 13.

This bill was closely patterned after the version that passed through the House and Senate Transportation Committees in 2004, passed both chambers of the legislature overwhelmingly, and was vetoed by then Governor Vilsack.
